Erin graduated from college in May 2008 and was surprised at the lack of resources for college students about what the transition into the "real world" is really like. In an effort to share her experience as a recent college graduate and create a resource for college students and recent grads, she created College Grad Lessons.

Adjusted To Adult Life

At some point during today it hit me. I’m officially adjusted to adult life. One year ago today, I would have been disappointed to wake up any earlier than 1 p.m. I would have had no cares for the next week or two. When it got close to starting spring semester, I would have dreaded having to wake up for classes or doing homework. I would have been avoiding the fact that in one year (today) I would be an adult with a job, bills and other responsibilities.

Today, however, I was ashamed that I slept past 10 a.m. I didn’t know what to do with myself since I don’t have to go to work for the next week and a half. I tried to use my free time productively by running errands and studying for the GRE.

One year ago I was about to be a second semester senior. I was focused on having fun and avoiding “real life.” Today, I am proud that I have graduated college, have a job and can’t wait for the challenges and excitement that the future holds. There are so many lessons that I have learned over the past year, but none more significant than learning to take on every challenge enthusiastically and looking forward to what lies ahead.

To all of the college students that read this, I hope your next semester or semesters brings fun, friendships and memories. Remember that college is once in a life time, but what comes after is equally exciting. To all of the college graduates, take a moment to appreciate how much you’ve grown up in the past year or years. Sometimes all of the advice in the world can’t replace just experiencing things as they happen.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and is excited for the new year!!
