Erin graduated from college in May 2008 and was surprised at the lack of resources for college students about what the transition into the "real world" is really like. In an effort to share her experience as a recent college graduate and create a resource for college students and recent grads, she created College Grad Lessons.

My First Grown Up Christmas

The past few months of my life I have flown by, but none faster than the month of December. As the holiday season was approaching, I was quite excited to get to enjoy the month leading up to Christmas. Some how I was convinced that I’d have lots of time to enjoy baking, Christmas movies, holiday shopping, etc. now that I’m out of college. Usually December meant final papers and exams and then crashing for the week before Christmas because I was so exhausted from the semester. I seemed to miscalculate the amount of free time that I’d have as a college graduate.

I barely had time to shop for gifts, and when I did, I hadn’t thought about what to get anyone. I really enjoy finding the perfect gift for everyone, so I was disappointed that I felt rushed. My housemates and I didn’t have time to decorate our tree until yesterday evening and our house doesn’t have Christmas lights or decorations outside.

I think the reason that I thought I’d be less busy after college was that I’d have one main priority - going to work. I figured that I college I juggled classes, homework, student government and a part-time job. How hard could a full-time job be? Adults don’t have homework right? Well, somehow running errands, finding something to eat for dinner, studying for the GRE, etc. plus working 40 hours a week leads to a pretty full schedule.

I’m still determined to fit in a few holiday activities before Christmas. Top priorities on my list are baking/decorating Christmas cookies, watching a Christmas movie and wrapping gifts while listening to Christmas music.

Turns out recent college grads are busy people. Lesson learned.
