Erin graduated from college in May 2008 and was surprised at the lack of resources for college students about what the transition into the "real world" is really like. In an effort to share her experience as a recent college graduate and create a resource for college students and recent grads, she created College Grad Lessons.

A Resolution for 2009

Driving back from my grandparents house (also know as “The Farm”), my boyfriend and I got to talking about all the things that we had done in 2008. It was a busy year for both of us, but 2009 might prove to be even more eventful. It’s exciting to think about what New Year’s Day 2010 might be like for me. I hope to start working on a Master’s Degree in Information Architecture, Interaction Design or something similar. I’ve also been thinking about looking for a job in another state (hopefully in the South) since some of the graduate programs I am applying to can be done entirely online. Ultimately I have no clue what I’ll be doing when 2009 comes to a close, but I’m enjoying the uncertainty.

In light of all of the possible changes I may experience in 2009, one of my resolutions is to make sure any changes I make in 2009 move me closer to my long term goals. While I have years and years ahead of me, I don’t want to catch myself spending my 20s doing things that are safe or comfortable and not moving toward what I really want to experience in life.

Here are the long term goals that I would like to move toward in one way or another this year:

  1. A master’s degree in something related to web design, information architecture or interaction design.
  2. A job at a small company where I can have leadership opportunities for projects.
  3. Live in South Carolina or Georgia.
  4. Buy a condo or house.

While I don’t expect to accomplish all of these goals this year, I want to be able to look back on the year and know that I made progress. Whether that progress is made through a new job, moving or enrolling in a graduate program, I want to know that I’m closer to my goals at the beginning of 2010 than I am today.

2009 holds a lot of uncertainty for me too. Most of them have to do with future grad school plans!

You provide a great resource for college students, and based on my interaction with them, one which they consider needed. Great concept. In fact, I am going to make a link from my site to your, since you are the first college student focused blog that I have encountered.

I most definitely am interested in the college student demographic. I am a motivational speaker, and they are my target audience. I wish to engage in a non-judgmental conversation with them about choices, decisions, and personal responsibility. I believe that there are more than 2 or 3 ways to look at any issue; there are at least 27. By recognizing that one has more options, one is more like to make responsible decisions, and those more innovative in nature, for ourselves and our greater community.
