Erin graduated from college in May 2008 and was surprised at the lack of resources for college students about what the transition into the "real world" is really like. In an effort to share her experience as a recent college graduate and create a resource for college students and recent grads, she created College Grad Lessons.

Break from Blogging

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

As some of you may already know, I decided to take a break from blogging for a bit to focus on my transition to grad school and figure out a good work/school balance for myself.

Please let me know if you have suggestions for full or part-time positions that would suit my interests in web development and social media and are located in the DC area (or allow telecommuting).

I hope to come back to College Grad Lessons shortly to share my preparation for grad school, my thoughts on being a year out of college and more.

College Grad Lessons is Three Months Old

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Today marks the three month anniversary of College Grad Lessons. This is still a very new blog, but I thought today’s post would be a good opportunity to share my development plan for this blog/project.

Over the next month, I hope to implement a new custom design, start highlighting other college grad bloggers and expand the resources beyond blog posts. In the future, I would like to offer discussion boards, an “Ask a College Grad” weekly Q & A feature and build resources for college students to use in preparing for life after college graduation.

I would love you get your response to the following questions:

  1. What resources would you like to see as a college student/recent college grad?
  2. Who are your favorite recent college grad bloggers?
  3. What questions did you have about life after college when you were a college senior?

Please comment with your responses or any thoughts on how to improve College Grad Lessons. Thanks!

College Grad Lessons is 1 Month Old Today!

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

College Grad Lessons is officially one month old today. While College Grad Lessons is still very new, I’ve already had the opportunity to meet some great people online, interact with friends I don’t see very often, share a bit of what I experienced since graduating college and much more. Thank you to everyone that has been reading so far.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to join 20 Something Bloggers, start Twittering and add a bit to my site’s layout. This is just the start of what I hope College Grad Lessons will become over the next year. When College Grad Lessons is 1 year old, I hope that it will have developed into a resource center and support network that college students and recent graduates can trust and rely on for information about life after college.

In the future, I hope to develop an organization that goes beyond this site and works to prepare students for graduating college, working and adult life. (more…)

Welcome to College Grad Lessons

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Since graduating in May, I’ve realized that there is a lot I wish that someone had told me about life after college before it actually happened. I decided to start the College Grad Lessons blog as a place to share college grad lessons as I learn them. In addition to sharing my experience as a recent college graduate, I hope to provide a collection of resources and tips for recent college graduates and college students about first jobs, housing, budgets and more.

I’ve been out of college for 6 months now. In that short time I’ve experienced a stressful job search, a summer internship, finding an apartment, finding a full-time job in a different location, finding someone to take over my apartment lease, finding a room to rent, making a lot of new friends and learning that “adult life” is very different from college life. So where am I now? I currently work on the Web Services Team the college I graduated from in May and rent a room in a house full of other young professionals. While I’m starting to get used to life after college, I still have a lot to figure out. My hope is that the resources and stories I share here will help other recent or soon-to-be college graduates prepare for and adjust to living on their own and working after college.

A year ago I wished that there were more resources for college students preparing for life after college that were written by recent college graduates. Now that I’ve graduated, I still wish that there was a place to share experiences and learn from other recent college graduates. I hope that this blog will give me the opportunity to help others while building a network of people going through similar experiences. In order to make this blog the most useful resource for everyone, I’d like to encourage you to share their experiences and ask questions by commenting on my posts. If you are a recent college graduate or college student blogging about similar topics, please let me know. I’d love to add you to my Blogroll and read your blog.
